16 Killed, 22 Injured in Senegal Road Accident

Reports say at least 16 people were killed and 22 injured after a bus and a lorry collided in Central Senegal, near Ndangalma village at 6 a.m. on Monday.

The 16 bodies were charred beyond recognition.
Emergency services responded promptly and transported the victims to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Road accidents are common in Senegal, primarily due to the poor state of roads and vehicles, reckless driving, and corrupt officials who are supposed to enforce the law or issue driving licences.

In August, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s government pledged a comprehensive response to the rise in road accidents.

Transport Minister El Malick Ndiaye announced that roadside inspections would be intensified and penalties would be increased.

He also urged transport operators to maintain vehicle standards, train and raise awareness among their staff, and adhere to working conditions, particularly concerning hours and fatigue.
