At least 18 people were brutally killed in coordinated attacks across several communities in Orsu Local Government Area, Imo State, on Sunday.
The affected areas included Umukabia, Eziawa, Ihitte Nasa, Umuhu, Amaoku, and Amaebe.
Victims were discovered with severe machete wounds, causing shock and outrage among locals.
Former Nigerian Human Rights Commission Chairman, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, who is from Orsu, highlighted the tragedy on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.
The attacks reportedly followed the annual masquerade festival celebrated in the area.
After the festival, locals and holiday returnees gathered at a drinking joint where nine people, including customers and attendants, were later found dead with machete wounds.
Other victims were discovered in Umukabia (three), Eziawa (five), and Ihitte Nasa (five). Witnesses reported no sounds of gunfire or arguments during the incidents.
Locals suspect members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN), allegedly with local collaborators, were responsible for the attacks.
Orsu has faced years of IPOB and ESN dominance, which had forced residents to flee until recent military operations restored partial stability.
Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, confirmed the killings and said a high-powered security team led by CP Aboki Danjuma is investigating.
Residents have been urged to remain calm as efforts to apprehend the perpetrators continue.
