The January 10, 2025 election for a new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo faces uncertainty following an Enugu High Court order directing all parties to maintain the status quo.
The pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation had scheduled the election, proposing Rivers State as the next President-General’s origin to recognise its Igbo status, sparking debates on representation.
The tenure of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, currently held by Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu in an acting capacity, is set to end on January 10, 2025.
However, a suit filed by former Imo State Governor Dr Ikedi Ohakim against Ohanaeze Ndigbo, its executives, and other members, threatens the process.
On January 3, Justice N.R. Oji granted an order for all parties to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of a motion for an interlocutory injunction.
The case has been adjourned to January 7, 2025, when the motion will be heard, determining the election’s fate.
