Abia Rep in Police Custody for Assaulting Driver

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained a Member of Parliament for allegedly assaulting a driver in Abuja.

Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that Alex Mascot Ikwechegh “is currently at Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.”

In a statement on Monday, the Command noted that the incident had been reported by Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose concerning the delivery method. During this altercation, Mr Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.

“The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude towards the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident. After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’ showing a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement.

“Currently, the suspect is at Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning,” the statement read.

The Command added that the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough inquiry into the situation.

“The Command is dedicated to conducting unbiased investigations and achieving justice in all circumstances. Following the conclusion of the investigation, necessary legal action will be taken.
