AFCON Qualifier: Rwanda Holds Eagles to Draw

Rwanda held Nigeria’s Super Eagles to a frustrating 0-0 draw in their second match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Despite dominating much of the game, Nigeria couldn’t break through Rwanda’s disciplined defense.

After a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic on Saturday, expectations were high for the Super Eagles to secure another win and maintain their perfect qualifying record.

Coach Augustine Eguavoen made just one change from the previous match, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru replacing Alex Iwobi in the starting lineup, while Victor Osimhen once again began on the bench.

Nigeria quickly took control of the game, with in-form Ademola Lookman troubling the Amavubi defense. Lookman thought he had given the Eagles the lead in the 22nd minute, but his goal was ruled offside—a decision that sparked disagreement among Nigerian fans.

Earlier, Victor Boniface had hit the post, and Nigeria failed to capitalize on the rebound.

At halftime, with the score still level, Eguavoen introduced Osimhen and Moses Simon, who had combined for Nigeria’s second goal against Benin. However, Rwanda, buoyed by the presence of President Paul Kagame, held firm in defense, preventing any breakthrough.

Nigeria continued to apply pressure late in the game, but Rwanda’s defense remained solid, and the Super Eagles were forced to settle for a draw.

Despite dropping two points, Nigeria remains at the top of the group with 4 points, while Rwanda sits in second with 2 points. The Super Eagles will aim to return to winning ways when they host Libya in their next match in October.
