Under the leadership of Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita, the University of Abuja‘s (UniAbuja) Governing Council has authorised Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi‘s appointment as the university’s seventh substantive vice chancellor.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at the 77th Extraordinary Meeting of the Council.
The appointment is non-renewable and has a five-year term that begins on January 1, 2025.
According to a statement signed by the university’s Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Habib Yakoob, Professor Maikudi was selected as the preferred candidate out of the ten shortlisted applicants who were interviewed by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board of the university. This was done by the current rules that govern the process.
According to the release, Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi began serving in an acting capacity on July 5, 2024, before being named the substantive vice chancellor.
“She showed outstanding leadership and dedication during this time, working closely with the Governing Council to stabilise the university through a difficult crisis,” the statement read.
Maikudi, a renowned researcher and professor of international law at the University of Abuja, was born in Katsina State on January 31, 1983.
She started her schooling at Sacred Heart School in Kaduna, where she graduated in 1993 with her First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC). In 1999, she passed the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and went on to Queens College in Yaba, Lagos.
During her academic career, Maikudi attended the University of Reading, where she graduated in 2004 with an LLB. In 2005, she earned an LLM from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she further specialised in public international law. She studied law at the Nigerian Law School from 2006 to 2007 before graduating from the University of Abuja in 2015 with a PhD in international law.
On September 4, 2008, she began working at the University of Abuja as a Lecturer II. She advanced through the ranks, eventually becoming a professor in 2021.
