Afam Ogene, the Member of the House of Representatives for Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, has firmly denied allegations that he and other lawmakers misappropriated N1 billion intended for constituency projects.

Instead, he highlighted that he had facilitated N1.3 billion worth of developmental projects for Ogbaru in the 2025 federal budget.

Speaking during a town hall meeting marking his second year in office, Ogene described the circulating accusations as unfounded and malicious attempts to discredit the efforts of lawmakers.

He clarified that the N1 billion figure cited on social media represents the budgeted amount allocated to each House member for constituency projects in the 2025 federal budget—funds which, he emphasised, have not yet been released or implemented by the federal government.

Ogene explained that through personal lobbying, he was able to secure an additional N1.3 billion for numerous initiatives in his constituency.

He detailed these during his scorecard presentation at the well-attended town hall meeting, which drew traditional rulers, community and religious leaders, youth and women representatives, landlord and market associations, and political figures from APGA, PDP, and APC.

As Chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy and leader of the Labour Party caucus, Ogene also mentioned that payments for 2024 projects remain incomplete.

However, he expressed confidence that the full implementation of the 2025 budget and any supplementary provisions would allow him to exceed his electoral promises.

He urged constituents to rely on official sources for information concerning constituency funding, warning against the dangers of misinformation.

“I will keep prioritising the peace, development, and progress of Ogbaru in every decision I make as your representative,” he said, reaffirming his dedication to service.

He outlined a wide range of projects featured in the upcoming budget, including solar street lighting, water schemes, security vehicles for vigilante operations, school science equipment, examination halls, women and youth empowerment initiatives, and the establishment of a cottage hospital.

In his performance review, Ogene reported the sponsorship of 19 bills and 12 motions. He also highlighted that streetlights had been installed in 27 communities over the last six months, and over 250 individuals had benefited from training in ICT, solar technology, fisheries, clean energy, and financial literacy.

The gathering saw constituents commend Ogene’s efforts and encourage him to continue his developmental agenda. His Chief of Staff, Chinedu Uwolo, opened the event by thanking constituents for their continued support and trust.

Once again addressing the embezzlement claims, Ogene dismissed the notion that lawmakers had received N1 billion in cash, insisting the sum only reflects unexecuted budget provisions.

He listed several initiatives secured through his efforts, including boreholes, transformers, bridges, erosion control, health facilities, school equipment, and empowerment programmes.

Refuting allegations about personal misuse of funds, Ogene stated that his home was financed through a personal bank loan from UBA, not public money.

He appealed for calm and unity, urging people to avoid confrontations on social media and instead work together for the good of the constituency.

Touching on national budget matters, he stressed the need for full implementation, noting that the budget should ideally be executed at 90 to 100 per cent to have a meaningful impact.

In support, Mr. Paul Nwosu, a former Anambra State Commissioner for Information, praised Ogene’s achievements and encouraged the public to rally behind him.

Chief Mike Chukwurah appealed to Ogene to pursue a petition submitted to the Nigerian government regarding oil exploration in Ogbaru.

SP Andrew Gabriel, the Ogbaru Divisional Police Officer, commended Ogene for renovating police quarters and appealed for assistance with a borehole project. Ogene promised immediate action, highlighting his commitment to security in the region.

Chief Emma Obi, who chairs all Presidents-General in Ogbaru, expressed appreciation while calling for greater attention to agriculture and local security issues.

Igwe Awogu of Osamalla Kingdom also praised Ogene’s transparency and dedication to public service.
