Arsenal have completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal reportedly worth around £55 million, marking their second major addition of the summer transfer window.
The 26-year-old Euro 2024 winner, who had been on the radar of Liverpool and Real Madrid, has signed a five-year contract with the Gunners.
Describing the transfer as a “huge moment” in his career, Zubimendi said, “It’s the move I’ve been hoping for. From the moment I arrived, I could see how big this club is. Arsenal’s style suits me perfectly, and their progress in recent seasons shows the best is still to come.”
According to The Athletic, Arsenal paid more than the €60 million (£51 million) release clause in Zubimendi’s contract to spread the payment over instalments.
Zubimendi made 236 appearances for Real Sociedad after progressing through their academy and has earned 19 caps for Spain. His arrival follows the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho, strengthening Mikel Arteta’s midfield options.

The new signing is expected to allow Declan Rice to adopt a more advanced midfield role alongside club captain Martin Ødegaard.
“Martin is a player with tremendous intelligence and technical ability,” said Arteta. “He’ll slot into our system seamlessly and has everything to become a vital part of the squad.”
Zubimendi is Arsenal’s second summer signing after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga joined from Chelsea. The Gunners are also reportedly close to finalising a deal for Brentford midfielder Christian Nørgaard.
After finishing second in the Premier League for a third consecutive season and reaching the Champions League semi-finals, Arsenal remain in pursuit of silverware, having gone five years without a trophy.
Attention now turns to bolstering the attack. With Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz struggling with injuries last season, Arsenal are reportedly nearing a move for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyökeres to fill the number nine role.
The North London side have also been linked with Chelsea winger Noni Madueke as they prepare to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title.
