Barcelona raced against time on Tuesday to secure Dani Olmo’s registration after a Spanish court blocked their second attempt to extend it.
Due to La Liga’s strict financial limits, Olmo’s registration was initially only valid until December 31, 2024, despite the playmaker being one of Barcelona’s key signings last summer.
The club had tried to extend his registration until June 30, 2025, but both a Barcelona court and a commercial court in the Catalan capital rejected the request.
Barcelona had registered Olmo using 80% of injured defender Andreas Christensen’s salary, thanks to an exception for long-term injuries. However, the court ruled that this could not apply to registrations exceeding the salary cap.
Reports suggested Barcelona submitted documents to La Liga on Tuesday, outlining plans to generate €100 million by selling VIP seats at their future expanded Camp Nou.
Olmo’s contract, which runs until 2030, includes a clause allowing him to leave if he cannot be registered.
His potential departure would be a significant blow to Barcelona’s title hopes, with the 26-year-old having contributed five goals in La Liga and played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory.
