Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen extended their impressive unbeaten streak to 48 games with a commanding 5-1 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.
Despite the absence of Xabi Alonso, who was serving a suspension, Leverkusen showcased their dominance with goals from Granit Xhaka, Patrik Schick, Jeremie Frimpong, and penalties converted by Exequiel Palacios and Victor Boniface.
“We had control of the game,” Xhaka told DAZN.
“We wanted to stay undefeated, we did that again – and we are really close to achieving something very special.”
Alonso opted to rest midfielder Florian Wirtz ahead of the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Roma, but Leverkusen’s attacking prowess remained unaffected.
Xhaka broke the deadlock with a spectacular long-range strike, only for Frankfurt to level through Hugo Ekitike, who continued his scoring streak for the third consecutive game. However, Leverkusen regained the lead just before halftime with a header from Schick. Palacios then extended their advantage from the penalty spot in the 58th minute.
In the closing stages, Frimpong, who had only been on the pitch for five minutes, added another goal before winning a late penalty.
Nigerian forward Victor Boniface confidently converted the spot-kick to seal Leverkusen’s first victory in Frankfurt in six years.
With an unbeaten run of 48 games across all competitions, Leverkusen is now on the verge of achieving a historic feat in Bundesliga history by completing an entire season without a defeat.
“That’s our challenge,” Alonso commented after the match. “A big challenge. Just two games to go and if we make that, it will be almost perfect. We’ll try it.”
In addition to their league success, Bayer Leverkusen holds a 2-0 advantage heading into the Europa League semi-final second leg and has secured a spot in the final of the German Cup, keeping their hopes of an unprecedented unbeaten treble alive.
