South Africa reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N2 bird flu on a farm in the eastern part of the country, the Paris-based World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) said on Monday, citing a report from local authorities.

A total of 58 “domestic birds” of a total flock of 200 were found dead of the highly contagious virus. No additional details on the type of birds.

The H5N2 is a subtype of the species Influenzavirus A which infects a wide variety of birds, including chickens, ducks, turkeys.

Elsewhere, India recently reported two cases of H5N1 outbreaks in backyard ducks at two locations in Kerala state in the south, which led to the loss of more than 18,000 birds.

In other high-path avian flu developments, South Africa reported a H5N2 outbreak in birds at a farm in KwaZulu Natal province on its eastern coast.
