Three migrants tragically lost their lives on Sunday during an attempt to cross the English Channel from France to the UK, according to the mayor of Sangatte, Guy Allemand. The deaths bring the total number of fatalities from failed Channel crossings this year to a confirmed 76.
The incident occurred near Bleriot-Plage, a public beach near the port of Calais, at around 6:00 am (0500 GMT). The migrants’ boat encountered difficulties, and several individuals fell into the water while attempting to board the overcrowded vessel. French maritime services reported that emergency services on the beach assisted around 50 people, many of whom were suffering from hypothermia. Some were taken to Sangatte’s nautical base for treatment.
The French Navy deployed a helicopter to assist in the rescue efforts, while seven of the migrants required intensive care. Despite the challenges, the vessel continued its journey towards the English coast.
The mayor of Sangatte expressed his frustration, stating, “It never stops. It’s crossing after crossing, without any letup.” Recent favourable winds have encouraged many to attempt the perilous journey. Between Wednesday and Saturday, around 1,500 migrants reached British waters in small boats, according to UK authorities.
Since the start of the year, it is estimated that 36,000 migrants have crossed the Channel in small boats. French authorities reported that several such vessels departed from the French coast early on Sunday, showing the continued dangers migrants face in their attempts to reach the UK.
