Cholera Outbreak: Four Dead, 36 Hospitalised in Adamawa

Four people in Adamawa State have succumbed to cholera, with 36 others currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals.

The Chairman of Yola-North Local Government Area, Mr Jibrin Ibrahim, announced this to newsmen during his visit to the victims at the Infectious Disease Centre, IDC, Yola, on Sunday.

Ibrahim noted that the outbreak occurred in the area’s Alkalawa, Ajiya, and Limawa wards.

“No fewer than 20 victims were reported in the morning but now there are more than 40 cases and four have died.
“A good number of them have been stabilised as they have been receiving attention by the health workers,” he said.

Ibrahim expressed gratitude for the prompt assistance healthcare professionals, the Red Cross, and global collaborators provided.
He stated that the outbreak was due to water contamination resulting from flooding in specific regions.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Cholera remains a global threat to public health and an indicator of inequity and lack of social development.
