The Federal Capital Territory High Court’s Justice Halilu Yusuf granted former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele ₦2 billion bail on Monday.
The court granted bail following Emefiele’s arraignment on an eight-count charge, including allegations of illegally acquiring a housing estate of 753 units and controlling billions of naira through proxy accounts.
In his ruling, Justice Yusuf observed that Emefiele had already received bail in three other criminal cases and had not breached any bail conditions. On that basis, the judge agreed to grant him bail.

Justice Yusuf ordered Emefiele to present two sureties who must own properties valued at ₦2 billion each, located in Asokoro, Maitama, or Wuse 2 within the court’s jurisdiction.
He further directed Emefiele to submit all travel documents and mandated him to fulfil the bail conditions by Wednesday or face remand in custody.
Emefiele’s lawyer, Matthew Burkaa, moved the bail application, which the prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, did not oppose. However, Oyedepo requested the court to attach additional bail conditions, distinct from those imposed in earlier cases.
