Malawi’s High Court has blocked the deployment of newly recruited health workers on allegations that many lack proper qualifications to practice nursing in the country.

At least five hundred unemployed nurses obtained a court injunction halting the deployment, alleging that many of those selected are unqualified and unlicensed to practice in Malawi.

Meanwhile, a judicial review application on behalf of 497 other unemployed qualified nurses has been filed challenging the Ministry of Health’s recruitment process for nursing officer, nurse midwife technician, and community midwife assistant positions.

The interim order, dated June 30, requires the newly recruited candidates to report for duty by July 1 but remain on standby until the court resolves the matter.

The court granted permission for the judicial review and ordered an expedited hearing of the case, which will be heard by a single judge.
