Many prisoners escaped from a prison in the Comoros capital Moroni on Thursday morning, without being stopped by prison wardens.
The prisoners numbering 38 escaped from Moroni Prison, the Indian Ocean island archipelago’s largest penitentiary, due to the negligence of security guards, public prosecutor Ali Mohamed Djounaid told reporters.
Djounaid said that the authorities had launched an investigation into what happened.
“The prisoners took the opportunity to escape through the normal gate,” he explained.
Government spokesperson Houmed Msaidie said there were indications that the escape had been prearranged.
