The Edo State House of Assembly has approved a motion suspending all chairmen and vice chairmen of the state’s 18 local government councils for two months.

The House also directed legislative leaders to take over leadership of their respective councils.

The council’s chairman and deputies were suspended following a motion proposed by Isibor Adeh, a member of Esan North East I, and seconded by Donald Okogbe, a member of Akoko-Edo II.

Senator Monday Okpebholo, the state’s governor, had petitioned the House about the chairmen’s failure to deliver financial documents from their local governments to the state government.

In the letter, the governor, who described their actions as insubordination and grave misconduct, asked the House to investigate.

When the topic came up for debate, 14 members voted in favour of the resolution to suspend them, six opposed it, and three did not vote.

Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker of the House, had already instructed the members that they all speak on the topic.

After everyone had spoken, the speaker asked the House clerk, Yahaya Omogbai, to conduct a head count of those who supported or opposed the suspension of the council’s chairman and their deputies.
