Former Senator and now Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, delivered a heartfelt valedictory speech in the Senate on Wednesday.

The address followed the announcement by Senate President Godswill Akpabio declaring Okpebholo’s seat vacant and instructing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to expedite the process of holding elections to fill the position.

Okpebholo, who previously represented the Edo Central Senatorial District, assumed his new role as Governor of Edo State following his election.

In his farewell remarks to the 10th Senate, Okpebholo reflected on his time in the Red Chamber, expressing gratitude for the relationships he built with colleagues.

“Distinguished colleagues, this is quite emotional for me. From the moment I joined this 10th Senate in June 2023, every moment in the Red Chamber has been especially memorable,” he remarked.

He spoke of the Senate’s collective dedication to democracy and how his tenure, though brief, had inspired him to pursue his gubernatorial ambitions.

“There is no way my story can be told without my distinguished colleagues here. The support, advice, and prayers were immense,” he continued, extending special thanks to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and other principal officers for their guidance and encouragement during his campaign.

Okpebholo also highlighted how his legislative experience would shape his approach to governance. “My involvement in the business of legislation has deepened my passion for good governance, particularly in infrastructure, security, education, and health,” he stated, pledging to remain a bridge between the legislative and executive branches.

He concluded his speech with gratitude to his colleagues and close friends in the Senate, saying, “To all of you, I want to say Obilu!”
