Empoli made history on Wednesday by reaching the Italian Cup semi-finals for the first time, defeating Juventus 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw.
Luca Marianucci converted the decisive spot kick, setting up a last-four clash with Bologna in April.
Empoli, currently struggling in Serie A’s relegation zone, showed remarkable composure in the shootout, converting all four of their penalties.
Juventus initially fell behind to Youssef Maleh’s powerful first-half strike, which led to loud boos from the home crowd at the break.
However, Khephren Thuram produced a moment of brilliance in the 66th minute, dazzling with a back-heeled flick past Liam Henderson before smashing home the equaliser.

Despite Juve’s second-half resurgence, Dusan Vlahovic missed their opening penalty, sending his effort over the bar, while Kenan Yildiz had his attempt saved by Empoli goalkeeper Devis Vasquez. That left Marianucci with the chance to seal a famous victory, which he took with confidence.
Empoli’s reward is a historic semifinal against Bologna, while the other last-four tie will see a Milan derby between Inter and AC Milan after Inter’s 2-0 victory over Lazio on Tuesday.
