The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has instructed the public to report any misbehaviour by police officers to their superiors, the state’s commissioner of police, or the heads of their respective Complaint Response Units (CRU).
ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, signed a statement on Saturday titled “PUBLIC NOTICE MISUSE OF NAME, OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE,” warning the public to be wary of officers or individuals who attempt to exploit them by claiming to have connections to Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, or any senior police officer.
“The Nigeria Police Force is worried about the unprofessional behaviour of a few officers that keeps happening, as it damages the force’s reputation and standards. Even after being warned repeatedly and subjected to disciplinary measures, some officials continue to engage in these dishonourable behaviours that undermine public confidence.
“What is even more concerning is the fraudulent use of the Inspector-General of Police’s name and position to carry out these unlawful actions.
“The goal of this strategy is to scare victims into thinking that the IGP exists and supports their unlawful behaviour. This frequently discourages victims from informing higher authorities about these incidents. The public is urged to report any misbehaviour by police officers to their supervisors, the state’s commissioner of police, or the heads of their respective Complaint Response Units (CRUs).
The CRU’s contact details for each state have already been made public.
The statement partially read, “Therefore, members of the public are advised to exercise caution when approached by officers or individuals claiming connections with the IGP or any senior officer for influence or favour.”
Adejobi then gave the public phone numbers to file official complaints against negligent police officers.
“We strongly advise you to report such cases to the Nigeria Police Force right away by calling the following numbers: DCP Akin Fakorede, Head, IGP Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja: 08184077076; ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja: 08037168147; CSP Taiwo Oyewale, Head, IGP Special Investigation Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja: 08069318238; SP Sherriff Lawal, ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to the IGP: 08094712605.”
The Nigeria Police Force pledged to maintain the highest levels of professionalism and integrity for all Nigerians.
To guarantee that justice and equity always win out, it urged the public to work with the NPF by reporting any suspicious activity.
