First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has launched the “Free To Shine Triple Elimination” campaign in Akure, Ondo State, marking the fifth Nigerian region to join the initiative aimed at eradicating HIV/AIDS, syphilis, and hepatitis by 2030.
A statement released by the SSA Media to the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Busola Kukoyi, on Friday, April 18, 2025, hinted that during the launch, she emphasised the importance of engaging with all stakeholders and eliminating the stigma associated with these diseases.

She commended the resilience of people living with HIV/AIDS and acknowledged the contributions of healthcare workers, government agencies like NACA and NASCP, and international partners.

Tinubu stressed that the youth, who are disproportionately affected by new infections, must lead the campaign.
She urged them to prioritise their health and utilise available resources, highlighting the increased media advocacy across Nigeria. She also called for deeper engagement with traditional and faith-based institutions to address cultural and religious barriers to HIV prevention and treatment.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa pledged to review the state budget to address healthcare funding challenges related to these diseases, particularly in light of reduced international funding.
Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, assured that the Nigerian government is addressing the need for affordable liver and kidney function tests and treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS, especially those not covered by health insurance.

The launch event featured a performance by Oluwatomilayo, emphasising healthy lifestyles for youth. First Lady Tinubu then officially launched the campaign, which focuses on prevention and reducing prevalence among women of reproductive age and young children.
With the Southwest launch, the Southeast remains the only region yet to activate the “Free to Shine Triple Elimination” campaign.
