More than 90,000 displaced Palestinians are currently sheltering in 115 United Nations-run facilities throughout the Gaza Strip, according to a statement released on Sunday, April 20, by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), as reported by Anadolu Agency.

The UNRWA described the humanitarian conditions as rapidly deteriorating, citing ongoing bombardments and a strict blockade that has severely restricted the entry of food, medical supplies, and other essential humanitarian aid.

“An already dire situation is deteriorating due to bombardment and the siege blocking the entry of humanitarian and commercial supplies,” the agency noted.

Since March 2, 2025, all border crossings into Gaza have remained closed, effectively cutting off the flow of life-saving aid.

Multiple international organisations and human rights groups have warned that this has worsened the crisis for civilians, particularly vulnerable populations.

The UNRWA further estimated that approximately 420,000 people have been newly displaced following the collapse of a temporary ceasefire agreement in March.

The Israeli military resumed operations in Gaza on March 18, effectively ending a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that had been in place since January 19. Since then, at least 1,827 Palestinians have been reported killed, with many more injured.

In total, more than 51,200 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023, with a significant portion of the casualties reported to be women and children.

In November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, citing alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza.

Israel is also still facing genocide charges at the International Court of Justice.
