Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has ordered the immediate shutdown of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, IBB University, Lapai, citing urgent security concerns.
This directive was disclosed in a statement issued Wednesday in Minna by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman.
According to Usman, the decision comes in the wake of disturbing security breaches and the heartbreaking loss of lives within the university environment.
He emphasised that the safety and well-being of all residents—especially students—remains the government’s foremost concern.

“We are deeply saddened by recent incidents. The government is taking proactive steps to swiftly address the situation,” Usman said.
Secretary to the Niger State Government, Ahmed Ibrahim Usman, has called for calm and vigilance following the closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University over security concerns. The shutdown came after the killing of a student on Monday, June 23.
Usman urged members of the university community to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with security agencies, assuring that government efforts were underway to restore order and guarantee safety.
“The perpetrators of the security breaches will be identified and prosecuted accordingly,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
He appealed for patience and promised further updates as the situation unfolds.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the university was shut down in response to the incident.
