A top diplomat in Iran has cautioned UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that Tehran is prepared for a “decisive and regretful” retaliation if Israel launches a strike in response to a recent missile attack.
On October 1, Iran fired approximately 200 missiles at Israel in retaliation for the deaths of its close allies: Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and an Iranian general. In response, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant warned that any retaliation would be “deadly, precise, and surprising.”
“Iran, while making all-out efforts to protect the peace and security of the region, is fully prepared for a decisive and regretful response to any adventures,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated during a call with Guterres, according to a statement released on Wednesday.
During the conversation on Tuesday evening, Araghchi also called on the UN to mobilise its resources to “to stop the crimes and aggressions of the Israeli regime and to send humanitarian aid to Lebanon and Gaza.”
In recent days, Araghchi has visited Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, and Oman, in an effort to de-escalate tensions. On Wednesday, he arrived in Jordan before planning visits to Egypt and Turkey, according to Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei, who shared the information on social media platform X.
