The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed receiving letters of intent from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties.
Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Wednesday, stating that the applications are being processed in line with existing laws, regulations, and guidelines.
The Obidient Peoples Party (OPP) and the Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA) are among the associations applying for registration. Notably, Mr. Barry Avotu Johnson is listed as the protem national chairman of the OPP. Another application, the Progressive Obedients Party, also references the “Obidient” movement—a political wave inspired by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The ADA is reportedly backed by members of an anti-Tinubu coalition, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, convener of the League of Northern Democrats Dr. Umar Ardo, and others.

“As of Monday, 23rd June 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations wishing to register as political parties. We are diligently processing the requests in accordance with the law and our guidelines. We have acknowledged all applications received so far, except for six submitted recently, which will be acknowledged before the end of the week,” said Yakubu.
He encouraged Nigerians, particularly those interested in registering political parties, to consult the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022, available on the Commission’s website.
INEC has also released the full list of the 110 associations, detailing their proposed names, acronyms, addresses, and the names of their chairmen and secretaries.
“The list will be uploaded to our website and social media platforms shortly. Hard copies have also been included in your folders for this meeting,” Yakubu added.
