Residents of Rimin Auzinawa, Ungogo Local Government Area, Kano State, clashed with security personnel during a demolition exercise, resulting in four reported deaths.
Security guards reportedly opened fire on the victims after residents resisted having their buildings destroyed, killing them.
Reporters were informed by an eyewitness that the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority had earlier designated the impacted structures—mostly residential complexes that were still under construction—for demolition.
According to reports, there were roughly 40 buildings impacted, and Bayero University in Kano owns the contested area.
In an interview, a resident impacted by the destruction, who asked not to be named, told reporters that the Kano Urban Property Development Authority had originally cleared the homes, verifying they were not on university property.

“We worked with KNUPDA to fix all difficulties. They told us that our properties were outside the boundaries of BUK. However, KNUPDA officials and security personnel showed up on Sunday night and destroyed the structures.
“Four persons have since been buried after security officers opened fire on them when they resisted. The situation is horrible,” the person stated.
Attempts to reach the Managing Director of KNUPDA were fruitless since his cell phone was off, making it impossible to get an official response.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident when contacted, but he instructed reporters to contact the PRO of the State Command of NSCDC.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC Kano State Command, Ibrahim Abdullahi, also confirmed the incident but declined to confirm the number of casualties or injured persons.
He clarified, however, that representatives of the police, DSS, and NSCDC were invited to provide security at the demolition sites.
“Security was provided by police, DSS, and NSCDC representatives who were invited. However, our people behaved properly and discreetly left when things got out of hand.
“The residents who were upset about the demolition began stoning security personnel who were there to provide security,” he said.
