Nick Kyrgios will make his Davis Cup return after a five-year hiatus, with Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt naming the unpredictable star for the upcoming tie against Sweden.
The 29-year-old last represented Australia in the team competition in 2019 and has shown little inclination to return due to injuries and other priorities. However, following wrist surgery and a recent comeback at the Brisbane International, Kyrgios has been included in the four-man squad alongside Alex de Minaur, Jordan Thompson, and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Despite his return to the court last week, Kyrgios struggled, losing a three-set match to rising French talent Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. He admitted that he would need a miracle to perform well at the Australian Open, which begins this weekend.
Australia, who reached the semi-finals of last year’s Davis Cup, will face Sweden in Stockholm from January 31 to February 1.
