Following England’s defeat against Greece on Thursday night, Lee Carsley, the interim head coach, has expressed uncertainty about continuing in his current role, leaving The FA with a significant decision to make.
England’s disappointing loss to Greece has left The Football Association with a crucial choice to make in the match’s aftermath.
Despite a successful start to his interim tenure with wins over the Republic of Ireland and Iceland, Lee Carsley, aged 50, surprised many by announcing his intention to return to his previous position as head coach of the Under-21s after the next three games.
After the match, Carsley stated, “I was quite surprised after the last camp in terms of the job’s mine, and it’s mine to lose and all the rest of it. My remit has been clear. I’m doing three camps, three games left, and hopefully, I’ll return to the 21s. It’s had almost no impact,” when asked about his future.
Despite being pressed to clarify his remarks, Carsley later confirmed that he was not ruling himself in or out of contention for the full-time position. England’s underwhelming performance against Greece has also raised doubts.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that The FA had not initiated discussions with any of the four candidates frequently linked with the role: Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel, Eddie Howe, and Graham Potter.
