Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana,” passed away at the age of 61 on Thursday, following a prolonged illness.

The Nigerian national team paid tribute to the iconic figure, hailing him as a giant in Nigerian football history whose contributions will be remembered forever.

In a statement on X, the Super Eagles lauded Rufai’s remarkable legacy, particularly his heroic performances as a goalkeeper and his broader influence off the pitch.

They expressed their sorrow, stating, “Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion. Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”

Rufai was a charismatic and highly regarded goalkeeper, considered one of Nigeria’s finest.

He was a key member of the historic 1994 Nigerian squad that secured the Africa Cup of Nations title and made Nigeria’s debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup in the same year.
