Jurgen Klopp described Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Tottenham as a reflection of their season, acknowledging their highs and lows as they maintained their challenge for a top-four Premier League finish on Sunday.
Liverpool, after winning just one of their previous five league matches, found their form again as they surged to a 4-0 lead against Tottenham. Mohamed Salah, reinstated in the starting lineup following his recent dispute with Klopp, opened the scoring, followed by goals from Andy Robertson, Cody Gakpo, and Harvey Elliott.
Despite late goals from Richarlison and Son Heung-min for Tottenham, the damage to their hopes of Champions League qualification was already done.
Klopp’s side secured no lower than third place and narrowed the gap on league leaders Arsenal to five points with two games left. Spurs, on the other hand, have now suffered four consecutive defeats, leaving them seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa with only three games remaining.
Tottenham realistically need to win all their remaining matches to have any chance of catching up with Villa, but their recent performances have been far from convincing.
The Australian manager, Ange Postecoglou, admitted his frustration after the match, stating, “Obviously a hugely disappointing outcome for us.”
Salah’s goal marked a return to form after a period of struggle, emphasising his importance to Liverpool’s success.
Despite Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities, Tottenham’s late surge was insufficient to alter the outcome, dealing a significant blow to their Champions League aspirations for next season.
