The political unrest that has enveloped Rivers State will not go away unless President Bola Tinubu reins in Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This was stated by prominent journalist and public commentator Mahmud Jega during his appearance on the Arise TV programme on Wednesday.
The president declared a state of emergency as the political crisis in the oil-rich state reached a climax on Tuesday night.
However, Jega asserts that Wike, Fubara’s predecessor and estranged godfather, is responsible for the development and continuation of the political crisis gripping the state and that the issue will never be resolved unless something is done about it.

“And as for whether this will resolve the issue in Rivers State, I don’t think so because, as was mentioned, the president ought to have mentioned the FCT minister, who is deeply involved in the development and continuation of this issue, in addition to establishing Governor Fubara’s wrongdoings.
“Is it typical for a godfather to sit down in Abuja and start dividing the House of Assembly, creating all sorts of issues in a state he formerly ruled?
“The issue in Rivers State will not be resolved before 2027 unless something is done about that.”
Jega stated that he anticipates PDP governors to challenge the president’s decision in the Supreme Court.
“The legality of the declaration is the primary issue at hand, and the suspension of democratic structures must be clarified in particular.
“As a matter between the states and the Nigerian government, I believe that certain PDP-controlled states may soon take the proclamation to the Supreme Court to have its validity tested.
“The portion of the pronouncement that eliminated constitutional structures is probably going to be struck down by the Apex Court if it is compatible with its 2018 ruling.”
