An Indian journalist who reported on alleged corruption in the country has been found dead in a septic tank in the state of Chhattisgarh.
The shocking discovery was made after Mukesh Chandrakar, 32, went missing on New Year’s Day, leading his family to report to the police.
His body was found in a septic tank at a road construction contractor’s property in Bijapur, after police tracked his mobile phone.
Three people have been arrested in connection with his death, including two of his relatives.
Chandrakar, a freelance journalist, was well-known for investigating corruption in public construction projects. His disappearance and death have caused outrage among journalists, with many demanding a full investigation.
His family reported him missing shortly after he disappeared. Police initially visited the site on January 2, then tracked his phone, which led them to the construction contractor’s property in Bijapur.
On January 3, they discovered his body in a newly covered septic tank near a badminton court.
Senior officers said concrete slabs had been placed over the tank, likely to hide the crime. Chandrakar’s body had serious injuries, suggesting he had been attacked violently.
Local authorities have set up a special team to investigate the case. The Press Council of India has asked for a detailed report from the state government about the circumstances of Chandrakar’s death.
Chandrakar was known for his brave reporting on corruption in public projects and also ran a popular YouTube channel, “Bastar Junction”, which had a large following. His work reportedly made him a target for those involved in corruption.
Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister called the death “heartbreaking” on social media, promising that justice would be done. Local journalists have protested, calling for strict action against those responsible.
Chandrakar’s death has renewed calls for better protection for journalists and stricter laws to protect press freedom.
Media organisations and local groups are demanding accountability, urging authorities to ensure a full investigation and quick justice.
