Today, February 6, the Council of Nelson Mandela University has unanimously approved the appointment of Professor Bobby J. Moroe as an Adjunct Professor in the Chair for Critical Studies in Higher Education Transformation.
Moroe, the Consul General of South Africa in Lagos and Acting High Commissioner of South Africa in Nigeria, brings over 20 years of diplomatic experience, along with extensive research and publications in diplomacy, political science, and international relations. His expertise is expected to significantly enrich academic discourse and engagement for both faculty and students.
Profile: Professor Bobby J. Moroe
Moroe is a seasoned diplomat, scholar, writer, and researcher with a distinguished career in international relations and diplomacy. Currently serving as the Consul General of South Africa in Lagos and Acting High Commissioner in Nigeria, he previously held the position of Deputy High Commissioner in Nigeria.

Moroe holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and is a Professor of Practice in Afrocentric Governance of Public Affairs at North-West University (NWU), South Africa.
He also serves on advisory boards, including the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge Systems at UKZN and the Afrocentric Governance of Public Affairs at NWU.
As an author, he has published South Africa and India – Perspectives on Socio-Economic Relations, marking him as one of the few African scholars who have translated their academic work into a published book on international relations.
His upcoming works include The Diplomatic Bag, a collection of writings on diplomacy and governance, and The Diplomat – In Good Standing, a memoir of his journey in diplomacy.
Moroe’s contributions extend beyond academia. In 2023, he was named one of Business Review Afrika’s Top 50 African Trailblazers, recognising his impact on governance, diplomacy, and public service.
He is known for his innovative, bold, and collaborative leadership style, championing South Africa’s foreign policy through what he terms “disruptive diplomacy”.
His past roles at DIRCO include serving as Speechwriter to the Minister, Head of Operations Centre, and Chief of Staff to the Director-General, where he spearheaded reforms for efficiency and effectiveness. As a lecturer at North-West University, he actively engaged in teaching, research, and academic discourse.
In his role as Consul-General in Lagos, Moroe continues to drive South Africa-Nigeria relations, leveraging opportunities to foster diplomatic and economic partnerships.
