Africa is set to witness the finest display of women’s football as the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) kicks off in Morocco on Saturday, July 5.
Postponed from last year, the tournament promises high-octane competition and a celebration of African football. Morocco, which hosted the last edition, welcomes the continent again as WAFCON enters a new era, building on the excitement of previous editions.
This year, the tournament prize pool has surged to $3.475 million — with $1 million for the winners, $500,000 for the runners-up, $350,000 for third place, and $300,000 for fourth. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has also unveiled a brand-new trophy, symbolising a fresh chapter for the competition.
Twelve teams will compete across three groups. The top two in each group, plus the two best third-placed teams, will progress to the quarter-finals, guaranteeing a competitive atmosphere from the first whistle. The tournament runs until 26 July, sharing the summer spotlight with the UEFA Women’s Euro.
The opening match sees hosts Morocco face Zambia’s Copper Queens — both teams made impressive runs in the last edition. Morocco reached the final, narrowly losing to South Africa, while Zambia clinched bronze by defeating Nigeria.
