The Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum (NHCF) has announced the launch of “Project 10Million,” a nationwide health initiative aimed at raising awareness and reducing the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly hypertension and diabetes.
Dr. Oyebanji Filani, Chairman of the NHCF and Commissioner for Health and Human Services in Ekiti State, revealed the campaign’s details in a statement in Abuja. The initiative, themed “Know Your Number, Control Your Number,” aims to screen 10 million Nigerians for hypertension and diabetes between October 28 and November 3.
Highlighting the growing health challenges posed by hypertension and diabetes, Dr. Filani noted that these conditions account for 27 percent of all annual deaths in Nigeria. He emphasised the urgency of intervention, citing a 17 percent probability of dying from these diseases between the ages of 30 and 70.
The project has received endorsement from the Nigeria Governors Forum and is being led by Health Commissioners from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The initiative seeks to ensure equitable access to healthcare, especially in underserved communities.
Filani described the coordinated effort as vital for addressing the rising burden of NCDs in Nigeria. He further noted that the campaign aligns with the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative and reflects the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) compact signed with President Bola Tinubu. The support of governors’ spouses and other stakeholders will play a crucial role in raising public awareness and encouraging Nigerians to prioritise their health.
The project’s objectives include screening 10 million Nigerians during the campaign week, providing counselling and referrals for individuals with concerning results, and linking newly detected cases to treatment. The initiative aims to raise public awareness about these life-threatening conditions.
