The Nigerian Ministry of Education announced on Monday that a new basic education curriculum will be introduced in schools across the country starting in January 2025.
At a stakeholders meeting in Abuja, Education Minister Professor Tahir Mamman revealed that the curriculum for senior secondary education will follow, commencing in September 2025. He highlighted that the new curriculum aims to tackle learning crises and improve employability by equipping students with essential 21st-century skills.
Professor Mamman indicated that the next three months will be dedicated to preparations, including creating teacher guides for implementing the curriculum. Dr Garba Gandu, the Director of Curriculum at the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), elaborated that the new curriculum will enhance students’ skills for global competitiveness, featuring 15 new trade subjects for basic education.
These subjects include basic digital literacy, information technology, and vocational entrepreneurship skills such as building and construction, plumbing, and tiling.
Additional areas of focus include hospitality skills like hair styling and makeup, as well as practical services such as construction, GSM repairs, satellite, CCTV installation and maintenance, and garment making.
