Nigeria: Ogun Assembly Passes Power Sector Bill

The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a bill aimed at enhancing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within the state.

Presented by Deputy Speaker Bolanle Ajayi, the bill focuses on establishing an electricity market, creating key power sector bodies, and enforcing consumer rights and obligations.

During the second reading of the bill on August 28, lawmakers debated its merits extensively. Many expressed gratitude to the federal and state governments, as well as the National Assembly, for shifting the issue of electricity from the Exclusive List to the Concurrent Legislative List. This change now allows states to independently generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within their jurisdictions.

The legislators highlighted that this initiative will foster healthy competition among electricity providers, create a more conducive environment for industries, and attract increased business investment.
