The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) has reiterated its dedication to strengthening tourism ties with the Republic of The Gambia, following a courtesy visit by a delegation from the West African nation. The four-member team, led by Hon. Yakuba Darboe, Chairman of the Brikama Area Council in Gambia’s Western Region, was welcomed at the NTDA headquarters in Abuja by Mr Richard Ovie Esewhaye, who is currently overseeing the Office of the Director General, along with other senior staff members.

During the visit, Hon. Darboe described Gambia as Nigeria’s “37th state”, a nod to the deep-rooted relationship between the two countries. He highlighted that tourism is central to Gambia’s economy and emphasised the country’s intention to promote its tourism appeal within Nigeria. Underscoring the ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol, he also pointed out that there is much to gain from regional cooperation, particularly in cultural exchange, investment, and tourism development.

“Nigeria, with its large population, presents a ready market for Gambian tourism, and we urge NTDA to include The Gambia when recommending travel destinations,” Darboe said.

Responding to the delegation, Mr Esewhaye praised the strong ties between the NTDA and the Gambia Tourism Board, referencing past collaborative efforts such as meetings with the Gambia Investment Forum. He urged both countries to move from mere agreements to concrete outcomes and acknowledged Gambia’s tourism successes, particularly in cultural exchange, revenue generation, and capacity development.

Mr F.O. Anumba, NTDA’s Director of Special Duties, added that the absence of direct flights between Nigeria and The Gambia remains a major barrier to tourism growth. He stressed that air connectivity would significantly improve tourist inflow and deepen bilateral ties.

The visit ended with Hon. Darboe presenting an Outstanding Leadership and Humanitarian Award to Mr Esewhaye, in recognition of his efforts in promoting tourism partnerships.
