The Federal Government of Nigeria is preparing to launch a new electronic visa (E-Visa) system as part of a broader effort to streamline the visa issuance process and enhance airport security nationwide. This initiative, set to commence on 1 May 2025, is a joint collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Federal Ministry of Interior.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo explained that transitioning to an electronic system would modernise Nigeria’s visa application process. The move is also intended to strengthen airport security by reducing manual bottlenecks and improving efficiency for travellers entering the country.

As part of the rollout, the government will also introduce automated aircraft landing procedures and an exit card system. Minister of Interior Dr Tunji Ojo highlighted the significance of digitising the visa process, noting that it would make it much easier for travellers to obtain their permits electronically.

“The E-Visa will allow travelers to submit their applications online, providing the necessary documents and information, Nigerian Immigration authorities will then process and approve the applications, which travelers will present to immigration officials upon their arrival in the country.”

A centralised visa approval centre has already been set up at the Nigeria Immigration Headquarters in Abuja. Dr Ojo also noted that immigration officers have undergone extensive training and now operate with integrated systems linked to global criminal databases, including Interpol. This will allow for more rigorous background checks and enhance overall national security.

“We are also looking at removing bottlenecks and also making sure people can get visas to Nigeria without lobbying anybody to come into Nigeria.”

The initiative aims to make Nigerian borders more accessible without compromising security, inviting visitors to experience the country’s culture and natural beauty. Dr Ojo stressed that both ministries share a common goal: to protect and promote Nigerian interests.

He also confirmed that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Immigration Service would form a joint task team to oversee the implementation framework and ensure the smooth enforcement of the new immigration protocols.
