The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd. has clarified that reports of an explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) are false.
In a press release, NNPC stated that operations at the refinery were intentionally curtailed on January 25, 2025, to conduct planned maintenance work on key equipment.
According to the statement, this routine maintenance focuses on ensuring high-quality automotive gas oil (AGO) and kerosene production. NNPC has assured the public that the maintenance is progressing as scheduled and that the refinery will resume full operations within the next few days.
Despite the ongoing maintenance, NNPC says it has maintained a steady supply of AGO, with an average of eight trucks loaded daily over the past 11 days. The company has emphasized its commitment to ensuring a consistent supply of petroleum products to the Nigerian market.

This clarification comes as concerns about fuel scarcity and rising prices in Nigeria increase. The NNPC’s statement aims to reassure the public that the temporary reduction in production at the Warri refinery is not a cause for alarm and that the company is taking proactive steps to maintain fuel supply.
The Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company is one of Nigeria’s four major refineries that are crucial in domestic fuel production. Ensuring the smooth operation of these refineries is critical for meeting Nigeria’s energy needs and stabilising fuel prices.
NNPC Ltd. has expressed its appreciation for the patience and cooperation of stakeholders as it completes this essential maintenance work.
