Former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju-Ken Ohanenye, has stated she has no regret over her actions during her tenure, despite the controversies surrounding her time in office.
Ohanenye, who was appointed in August 2023, faced criticism for her outspoken nature, including her threat to sue the United Nations (UN) for alleged mismanagement of funds earmarked for Nigeria. She was dismissed by President Bola Tinubu on October 23, alongside four other ministers.
Reflecting on her time in office during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, she expressed pride in her efforts, asserting she gave her best to the role.
“I Did My Job Without Regrets”
“I had a responsibility to ensure things were done correctly, and I wouldn’t tolerate anyone undermining the trust placed in me,” Ohanenye said.
“There must be a positive impact on people. I’m glad I didn’t compromise, and I have no regrets about the way I performed my duties. I did my job to the best of my ability.”
Fundraising and Dismissal
The former minister recounted efforts to address issues such as child hawking through initiatives like mobile courts, despite facing financial constraints due to budget limitations.
She revealed that on October 15, generous Nigerians donated over ₦200 million to support her programmes to aid vulnerable populations. However, her dismissal came less than two weeks later.
“When I was sacked, there was no way to utilise the funds. I instructed the ministry’s secretary to notify the bank to reverse the donations,” she said.
Legacy and Controversies
Ohanenye’s tenure was marked by a mix of bold initiatives and contentious moments, with her approach sparking both support and criticism. Reflecting on her legacy, she emphasised her commitment to making a difference, even in the face of challenges.
Her comments come as Nigerians continue to debate the impact of Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle and the broader implications for governance in the country.
