The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has teamed up with APM Terminals to boost cargo movement between Apapa Port in Lagos and the NRC freight yard in Moniya, Ibadan.
This initiative is expected to improve logistics efficiency, increase rail freight capacity, and provide a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative for cargo movement.
The collaboration follows a recent meeting between Dr. Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of NRC, and Frederik Klinke, CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria.
According to a statement issued by NRC’s Deputy Director of Public Relations, Yakub Mahmood, preparations have been finalised to commence the cargo expansion project.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has concluded arrangement with the management of APM Terminals to commence the expansion of cargo movement from Papa port, Lagos, to Nigerian Railway Corporation freight yard in Moniya Ibadan,” the statement revealed.

The statement also noted that the collaboration has the potential to strengthen Nigeria’s role as a key hub for containerised goods, taking advantage of its strategic position near landlocked neighbouring countries. It is also expected to improve cargo turnaround times and facilitate the use of rail transport for cargo evacuation and export.
Dr. Opeifa highlighted that the collaboration aims to improve service reliability, efficiency, and sustainability for all NRC railway customers. He also noted that promoting rail transport could lead to lower logistics costs and more affordable goods and services, contributing positively to Nigeria’s economy and supporting the government’s economic goals.
This development comes just days after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved a $45.3 million contract for a feasibility study and engineering design of a rail route connecting four major seaports in Nigeria’s western region.
The proposed rail project will link Badagry, Tin Can, Apapa, and Lekki ports with the national rail network, further enhancing freight movement and driving economic growth.
