The Delta State government is finalising preparations for the internally displaced persons (IDP) rehabilitation camp in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area.
Chairman of the committee overseeing the Ewu IDP camp, Mr. Abraham Ogbodo, confirmed that the camp will be operational this week.
However, some Okuama community leaders have been reluctant regarding the relocation to the IDP camp, citing a preference to return to their ancestral homes.
Despite this, the state government has initiated plans to temporarily relocate the displaced residents to Ewu Grammar School until their community becomes habitable again.
State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori allocated N10 million to facilitate the camp’s setup.
Ogbodo explained that the delay in relocation was due to the extensive preparations required for the camp’s readiness.
The chairman expressed frustration at the resistance from some community leaders who have refused to comply with the directive.
“Now that we’ve pushed it to this point, some people want to ‘show themselves’. Were they able to help themselves in the first place? Were they not helpless?
“Today, we have a consolidated lawsuit. And so if the government has come up with even a long-term vision to resettle you and after that think of rebuilding your community, then why are the people trying to prove strong-headedness?” He queried.
He called attention to the risks associated with remaining in Okuama amidst the ongoing tensions.
Ogbodo called for a collaborative approach to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected individuals while navigating the complex aftermath of the Delta bloodbath.
