The Permanent Secretary of Osun State’s Ministry of Environment and Sanitation, Mr. Richard Oyegbami, has affirmed the state government’s proactive approach to preventing flood disasters in Osun.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday in Osogbo, Oyegbami highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to manage flood risks, noting the importance of early intervention and continuous maintenance.
He explained that the state carries out regular dredging of canals and waterways during both dry and rainy seasons as a precaution against flooding.
“While many Nigerian states suffered severe flooding in 2024, Osun recorded no incidents thanks to the government’s commitment to flood prevention,” Oyegbami said.
He revealed the existence of a dedicated Department of Flood Control within the ministry, which remains active year-round to ensure waterways remain clear.

The government has cleared drainage systems across all local government areas to facilitate free water flow. This effort has earned commendations from various communities within the state.
“We also run regular radio programmes every Thursday to educate residents about the risks of dumping waste in water channels, which can cause flooding,” he added.
Oyegbami further noted that environmental enforcement officers have been appointed to apprehend individuals who irresponsibly dispose of waste.
He urged residents to use private waste collection services and warned that those caught dumping waste illegally would face legal consequences.
