Tunisian authorities announced on Sunday that 105 irregular migrants had been rescued after their boats sank off the country’s coast in the Mediterranean Sea.
A spokesperson for the Tunisian National Guard, Houssam Eddine al-Jabali said on his social media account that the boats sank after the migrants ignored their warnings and continued to sail towards Europe.
Al-Jabali added that the survivors were of African origin.
For years, Maghreb countries which include Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia have witnessed attempts by migrants from mainly sub-Saharan Africa to reach Europe.
