The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for a major overhaul of Nigeria’s macro-economic policies to tackle the ongoing economic hardship under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
This demand was made following a meeting of PDP governors in Asaba, Delta State, where the party leaders also took steps to resolve internal disputes and reaffirm party unity.
The governors recognised Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the National Secretary, in line with a Court of Appeal ruling, and urged the National Executive Committee (NEC) to meet by March 13, 2025, to formalise the decisions and ensure party cohesion.
In a communiqué read by Senator Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, the governors expressed grave concern over Nigeria’s economic challenges, particularly the hardship faced by citizens. They attributed the widespread difficulties to the macro-economic policies of President Tinubu’s government, urging an immediate shift to alleviate the suffering.

“The Forum called on the federal government to either revisit or rejig its macro-economic policies to ameliorate and or stop the hardship/pains that they have inflicted on Nigerians, as no meaningful or impactful achievements in the states will be achieved until the harsh policies are addressed,” the communiqué stated, stressing that meaningful progress in the states would be hindered until these harsh policies are addressed.
The governors pointed to rising inflation, high unemployment, and declining purchasing power as critical issues that need urgent government action. They warned that prolonged economic distress could lead to further social instability and hamper development at all levels.
While acknowledging the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s Armed Forces and security agencies in combating insurgency and criminal activities, the PDP governors raised concerns about the resurgence of non-state actors threatening national stability. The forum called for a strengthened security architecture to protect lives and property across the nation.
The governors also commended their counterparts in PDP-controlled states, particularly Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, for their efforts in driving economic relief and sustainable development through infrastructure projects, environmental protection, and social empowerment initiatives.
In their statement, the PDP governors reiterated their commitment to reversing Nigeria’s economic decline and restoring national prosperity. They encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful, promising to work towards a return to the stable economic conditions and security that prevailed before 2015.
The leadership crisis within the PDP took a violent turn on Wednesday, as a Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting descended into chaos. The meeting was disrupted when two contenders, Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Udeh-Okoye, each claimed the position of National Secretary.
