Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on journalists to play a pivotal role in defending democracy and ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind. Obi made this statement during a courtesy visit to News Central TV at its Lagos headquarters on Monday September 9, 2024.

“We can’t build this country without sacrifices from all of us, and the fourth estate is very critical to this,” Obi said, emphasising the role of the press in nation-building.

He urged the media to help bridge divisions along ethnic and religious lines, highlighting the importance of unity in overcoming the nation’s challenges. He referenced the widespread suffering, hunger, and hardships across Nigeria, stressing the need to address these issues urgently.

The Labour Party leader added that Nigeria is in dire need of leadership, which he says would depend on the collective effort of the citizenry.
“If we have leaders who prioritise the country’s welfare over personal interests, Nigeria will thrive, and the people will enjoy a better life,” he added.

Obi also acknowledged the entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians, sharing a story of a Nigerian he met in Rwanda who is positively impacting lives, showcasing the resilience and potential of the nation’s citizens.
