A man named Theophilus Osazuwa has been taken into custody by the Edo State Police Command on suspicion of killing his four-year-old child while under the influence of hard drugs.
In a statement released on Wednesday night, the Command’s Spokesperson, Superintendent Moses Yamu, disclosed that the tragic incident occurred at approximately 12:30 pm on Tuesday at the suspect’s residence in Ogbeson Quarters, off Benin-Agbor Road, Benin City.
According to the statement, Osazuwa had just returned home when he suddenly appeared to enter a trance-like state. While in this condition, he allegedly screamed, “Holy Ghost fire,” before seizing his young son, Testimony Osazuwa, and slamming him against the wall.
Despite efforts to save the child, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Initial investigations suggest that Osazuwa may have acted under the influence of illicit drugs, including substances such as ice (methamphetamine).
Superintendent Yamu explained, “The suspect, known for consuming illicit substances, likely committed this heinous act while under their influence. The child was rushed to the hospital but sadly could not be saved.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Umoru Ozigi, has condemned the tragic incident and urged youths to abstain from consuming illicit drugs, highlighting the devastating impact such substances can have on individuals and society.
“This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drug abuse,” Ozigi said. “The loss of an innocent life is a grievous consequence, and we will ensure that justice is served.”
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
