The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects and seized a substantial amount of gunpowder hidden in a bag of garri.
In addition, a locally-made pistol and live ammunition were recovered during the operation, as reported by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Wednesday.
The operation took place during a routine patrol by the Police-led Joint Security Force in the pillar-pole area of Aguata on Sunday. Officers intercepted a suspect, whose identity is being withheld, who was carrying three bags of garri.
Upon searching the bags, officers discovered a large quantity of gunpowder concealed within the edible item. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect was on his way to a criminal camp to deliver supplies, including gunpowder for making improvised explosives. The suspect is currently in custody and is assisting police in locating other gang members.
In a separate incident, operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS) acted on reliable intelligence and raided a criminal hideout in Oba, Idemili South LGA. They arrested a suspect named Nelson Wisdom from Etsako East, Edo State, and recovered a locally fabricated pistol along with two live rounds of ammunition.
Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, emphasised that the Police Command and other security agencies will continue to act on credible information to combat crime and thwart the plans of criminal elements in the state.
“All suspects will be charged in court upon the completion of the investigation,” the statement concluded.
