Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, declared that the government will not tolerate any foreign interference following the violence that accompanied the #EndBadGovernance protests.
During a meeting with members of the diplomatic corps in Abuja on Wednesday, Tuggar warned that the government would take action against anyone, domestic or foreign, who funds the protests.
“While the government continues to work hard through various reform programs to address the challenges facing Nigeria and Nigerians, it is crucial to remind everyone that no nation tolerates foreign interference in its domestic affairs,” Tuggar stated. “Nigeria is no exception.”
He emphasized that the government would act against any foreign entity in Nigeria found to be directly or indirectly supporting the protesters or interfering in the country’s internal affairs.
“Nigeria values the cordial relationships with your countries and organisations and will not undermine such relationships,” he assured. “More than ever, we seek your understanding and collaboration in our ongoing efforts to address economic challenges and improve the lives of Nigerians at home and abroad.”
Tuggar began his address by highlighting government efforts to enhance socio-economic development, noting a reduction in debt servicing from 97% to 68%, along with other initiatives to ensure food security, create jobs, and attract investments.
He expressed concern over negative narratives on social media that threaten the nation’s peace and stability but assured diplomats that the Nigerian government is committed to protecting both the diplomatic community and Nigerian citizens in accordance with international laws.
The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, representatives of the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, lawmakers, and other officials.
